Ego Mastery

“Ego is any image you have of yourself that gives you a sense of identity—and that identity derives from the things you tell yourself and the things other people have been saying about you that you've decided to accept as truth.” ~ Eckhart Tolle

Ego Mastery is a practice only for those most dedicated and driven to realize the Truth. The Truth of who you are and of this story you’re living in. Ego Mastery is a beginner to advanced program that takes the most Enlightenment accelerating elements from Hinduism and Buddhism, strips them of their complex religious context and delivers their essential principles into your home. Anyone like me who has spent appreciable time in a monastery realizes their practices are legitimate means to Self-realizing Enlightenment, but their religious elements (chanting, praying to deities, and ritual ceremonies) aren’t compatible with non-religious types like myself and perhaps yourself. However, if you want the benefits of Monastic Zen practice in the comfort of your home, Ego Mastery is right for you.

WHAT IS THE EGO AND WHY MASTER IT?

The ego can be seen as simply that within you that looks outside itself for the: security, satisfaction, love, and completion you feel you inherently lack. It’s a convenient little fiction that helps run your life but it is also the narrator of all your suffering. It’s the self that is obsessed with its own advantages, its survival, and the constant judging, comparing, and analyzing that keeps it in control are the very things keeping you from ever finding true happiness. It wants to maintain self-centered control at all costs and since you can’t kill or get rid of your ego and still be human, mastering it is essential.

Believe it or not, if your basic needs are cared for, the only thing standing in the way of your living a happy, problem-free life is your self . Your self along with the limiting beliefs it holds to forward its selfish agenda, rob you of the potential of experiencing nirvana, bliss, and love in any given moment. Ego mastery goes beyond changing your attitude, outlook, or state of mind by instead proposing a complete change of your identity—from that of ego identification to True Self identification.

Most self help models and methods advocate keeping your current identity and attempt to elevate your life by changing thoughts with other thoughts, but the ego is still active—judging what is good or bad, right or wrong, emphasizing separation, and you are left living the consequences. Instead of swapping your current judgments for a set of seemingly more virtuous judgements, why not stop the critical mind altogether? This quantum leap requires Ego Mastery.

When you are no longer identified with the ego layer of consciousness, you transcend that plane and all of its judgments altogether. When you accomplish this, the nature of your thoughts naturally change along with the nature of how you view the problems you once had. You become a different self that no longer has to engage with the battles created by the previous, lower consciousness self. This is a much more efficient and effective means of elevating your life than most any other self-development method.

Ego Mastery is a process that is equivalent to the Actualization of Enlightenment practice offered by Buddhist and Yogic training, but without the religious requirements. This practice seeks to help you overcome your identification with the small, scared, separate, self-biased, self-centered, surviving, self-concept version of who you believe yourself to be. By doing so, you naturally make progress awakening into experiencing your True Self. You more easily enter presence and the problems that existed at the level of ego, no longer exist. That’s because most all suffering originates in your identification with, a deep-seated belief in, your being a separate individual self and only through directly experiencing the Truth of who you are can you transcend the inherent suffering that comes with existing at that level of vibrational consciousness.

If you want to experience true freedom, you have to experience the Truth of who you are and what this story called life is all about. Liberation in Buddhist philosophy means freedom from identification with the separate and individual self. This separate and individual self, in its attempts to support, protect, and enhance itself while clinging to what it wants, accounts for most all emotional suffering. As long as we look at spiritual experience from the perspective of the separate self, this freedom will elude us because we will be identified with the self that eternally needs to be supported, protected, and added-to. It is all too possible to have all kinds of spiritual experiences and realizations without fundamentally challenging the perspective of the egoic self. We repeat loops of insightful awakening and crashing despair and never stabilize the Actualization of Enlightenment.

Spiritual ego is a serious pitfall to avoid as you advance along the path. Before we know it, instead of flowing with the unfolding of Beingness, we are trying to ‘manifest’ situations in life that will please the ego-self and we will believe this is “spiritual work.” It isn’t. It’s ego work. To live awakened is to go beyond the ego and its limited, selfish perspective and biases. To awaken, we have to be able to see how reality looks when it is free from our ego’s self-centeredness. Through continual self-observational attention, we can observe and thus cure the ego of its compulsive control over our lives.

Have you ever noticed how much you take for granted in a given day that you could have profound loving gratitude for? Have you noticed how burdened you feel with the seriousness of believing you are a separate ‘doer’ that has to get it right and fears getting it wrong all the time? Where has all the play gone? Where has all the joy gone?

It has gone where your presence has gone—hidden away beneath the veils of ego delusion. Unmastered ego casts a spell over your once happy, joyful, abundantly grateful, loving presence experienced in childhood. Ego Mastery is about removing the spell through specific continual daily contemplative practice. This work includes using your Enneagram Type to unlock paths leading to overcoming ego obstacles specific to your personality.
